Solid Wood Furniture Care: The Basics That Keep It Looking New

Quick answer: Dust weekly with a dry soft cloth, wipe spills immediately, keep pieces out of direct sun and away from vents, and oil or wax once or twice a year. Light water rings often lift with a little furniture oil; deep scratches can be filled with a matching wax stick.

Tables

Use coasters and placemats on a farmhouse live-edge nightstand.

Consoles

Leave airflow behind a media console.

Shelves

Spread heavy items across a bookcase.

Seasons

Keep humidity between 35% and 55% year-round.

Your monthly ten-minute routine

Solid wood does not need much, but a short monthly check catches small problems before they turn into big ones.

  1. Dust every surface with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, working with the grain.
  2. Lift lamps, trays and decor so light can reach the whole top evenly.
  3. Open every drawer and door; if one drags, note the season — it is usually humidity, not a defect.
  4. Check that tall bookcases and consoles are still anchored to the wall.
  5. Look for dry, pale spots on tabletops; those are the areas that need oil first.

Oiled versus lacquered finishes

Oiled finishes soak into the wood and look natural; they need a fresh coat once or twice a year and are easy to touch up. Lacquered finishes form a harder shell; they rarely need anything beyond dusting but are harder to spot-repair. Each piece in our tables & desks and media consoles lists its finish, so you know which routine applies.

Memphis weather notes

West Tennessee swings from humid summers to dry, heated winters. Run a dehumidifier or A/C in July and August and a humidifier from December to February if you notice gaps opening in tabletops. Both are normal seasonal movement and close again as the air changes.

What never to use

Skip all-purpose kitchen sprays, bleach wipes and silicone polish. They cloud the finish and make future refinishing harder.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use polish spray?

Avoid silicone sprays — they build up over time.

Why did a crack appear in winter?

Dry heated air shrinks wood; add humidity.

Can I put hot dishes on it?

Always use a trivet under hot dishes.
