Quick answer: Choose a console at least as wide as the TV, ideally 6–12 inches wider on each side, and mount the TV so its center sits near eye level when seated — about 42 inches from the floor. Balance the wall with a lamp or shelf on each side.

Measuring for the right console

Before you shop, take three measurements: the width of your TV (not the screen size, which is measured diagonally), the height from floor to seated eye level, and the width of the wall you have to work with.

A 55-inch TV is about 48–49 inches wide, so a 60–72 inch console looks balanced.
A 65-inch TV is about 57 inches wide; aim for 70–80 inches of console.
A 75-inch TV is about 66 inches wide; look for 80 inches or more.

Mounted or standing?

If the TV sits on the console, choose a top height of about 20–26 inches so the screen center lands near eye level. If you wall-mount the TV, the console can be lower and longer, which gives a modern, ranch-house look.

Styling the top

Leave the area directly below the screen open. Group decor at the ends in odd numbers: a lamp, a stack of books with a small sculpture, and a plant or a single pair of boots for a western touch. Repeat the console's wood tone at least once elsewhere in the room, such as on a side table or shelf from our shelving collection.
